Another Multiverse

“Somewhere in Another Multiverse” is a small project inspired by NASA’s new gigantic space telescope, The James Webb Space Telescope, which was being build at the time.

This was intended as a small project, but as easy as it is to get carried away by the vastness of space, I soon found myself with ample inspiration to expand on te project. Using Adobe Illustrator, I created around 10 panels, and attempted to make a series of planets, telling different stories on their own, but cohesively fitting together.

The initial panel was the telescope panel. It was a simple representation of the space telescope, after which I slowly expanded, and build a universe around it. I used a variety of different techniques to make this fun project, also a great learning experience. The end result now allows me to rearrange the panels, to suit different sizes and mediums, according to preference.

The flexibility of the panels, and the happy colors I used to make them, make me excited about this project every time I think back to it, or I repurpose the panels. The series is now used for a bookmark, mouse pad and Spotify playlist cover.

Interstellar

As a young girl, thinking about space used to scare me. The vastnesss, openness and the darkness. I would attempt to imagine it, but the size of it all, felt impossible to grasp. The size of planets, or how they could look. So much unknown.

I imagined these planets, as they were, but static. However a few years ago, on Tumblr, I saw the most amazing gif, of our solar system, as it moved through space. Seeing the sun move, the planets move around their axis and around our sun, and how we move collectively. Traveling at an enormous pase, as we travel through their universe.

For me, this changed everything for how I am able to imagine space, and our place within it. Now the idea of space, and exploring beyond the stars, has become that much more exciting.

Star Shine

One of my major inspirations for this project, came from memories I have of my father’s books, which he used to keep next to his bed, and which I would look trough when I’d watch TV in my parents room. Science fiction books with covers so worn, they were falling apart. These books showed me to fantastical worlds, the strangest creatures and beautiful explosions of light.

This version of futurism, that you find in old Star Trek series, Star Wars, comics and scifi books, is where I drew a lot of my inspiration from. Old sci-fi has a very distinct style, that I wanted to be easily recognizable in this project, before we had pictures of stars and planets, and artists would make their interpretation, based on science and imagination.

Eclipse

Other inspiration I drew from “The Cosmos”, a space odyssey. Visualizing the view of the sky from a planet in another multiverse. Planets so big that they are unavoidable. Considering a world beyond our known understanding. And also inspired by the eclipse in the beautiful logo of the 2006 TV show “Heroes”.

Planning

I’m really happy with the current form of Somewhere in Another Multiverse, but I do feel it’s still a work in progress. Not because I consider it unfinished, but moreso that I feel this project has so much more potetial, which I hope to develop over time. Like space, the possibilities are endless.

It’s my hope to make this into physical tiles to decorate my office, but due to time constraints that’s currently on hold. I’d have to look into what method and materials I want to use. But I will update on this project when I come back to it in the future.
