Background

When I had the opportunity to visit the United States, one of the things I was confronted with was the difference in how Americans communicate temperature. It was difficult for me to grasp the temperature without having to make a conversion. Inspired by this, I decided to create a small chart to learn the difference.

Choices

For this project, I tested out my skills in Adobe Illustrator to create a small thermometer. It was fun to use gradients to indicate the temperature difference. At the time, I was very inspired by rainbows in all of my work, so of course, I found a way to overuse it in the design.

The font I used for this project is my favorite font, Century Gothic, by the famous Herb Lubalin. It was easy to select rounded Celsius numbers that I often use. With the help of a friend, I added some of the more commonly used ones, in the hope that these will resonate with anyone interested in getting a grasp on Celsius.

Reflections

As long as I have been alive, global warming has been a topic of conversation for people, and when I made this project, this was also the case in online conversations. This felt like a relevant project that didn’t particularly highlight the negatives, but a way to remain optimistic about our options.
