Background
A year after ChatGPT was unleashed to the public, its technology and applications have advanced at a very rapid pace. This project represents my continued research and exploration of its implications and uses.
Bing AI
For this project, I tested Bing’s image generation tool. Bing is well-positioned, given its direct collaboration with ChatGPT. The tool provided me with several free prompts, generating high-quality images very quickly.
In my opinion, the tool’s interpretation of prompts is very astute. It creatively intertwines the topics it is given, and the elements it creates are of high quality and appear anatomically correct.
Advancements in AI Art
AI-generated illustration has evolved significantly, moving beyond simple filters to leverage sophisticated deep learning models. These models are trained on massive image datasets, allowing them to interpret creative prompts and produce detailed, high-quality images.
This democratizes art creation, enabling those without traditional training to create complex visuals. It also serves as a powerful tool for professional artists, who can use AI to quickly brainstorm ideas and generate concept art, freeing them up for more complex creative tasks.
The Downside for Humans
The rapid rise of AI art has created tension within the creative community, as many AI models were trained on millions of images scraped from the internet without the original artists’ permission or compensation. This devalues the time and skill human creators have spent developing their craft.
Artists fear being replaced as individuals and companies opt for the speed and low cost of AI-generated images. The legal and ethical road ahead is complex, with current copyright laws struggling to keep pace.
Key questions remain about whether using copyrighted material for AI training constitutes fair use, and if an AI-generated image can be copyrighted. A number of lawsuits are underway, with artists and organizations like Getty Images suing AI companies for infringement, highlighting the need for clearer regulations and potential compensation for creators.
Reflections
Working on this project was a lot of fun. In a rapidly changing landscape, I feel it’s important for creatives, such as myself, to stay informed. This provides a foundational understanding as these technologies evolve. I believe they can spark inspiration and open the door to new opportunities. That said, I am eagerly watching the upside and downside of AI as it evolves.
